If you are a diabetic, as with so many things in your life, special precautions and considerations need to be taken if you are considering Lasik eye surgery in Chicago or anywhere else.
Two Things That Are Vastly Important
For a diabetic considering Lasik surgery there are two ultimately important factors. If you suffer any of the following because of your diabetes: neovascularization; retinal vasculature which is fragile; any kind of retinopathy; cataracts (and basically an ocular surface that is unhealthy), you may not qualify for Lasik surgery. Secondly, you need to be in control of your blood sugar level. If your glucose levels fluctuate so may your diabetes induced vision problems. Varying degrees of ocular health make it difficult to perform the exact, specified procedures necessary.
Secondary Diabetic Considerations; But Still Important
If retinopathy is a problem resulting from your diabetes, Lasik surgery could actually aggravate the condition. Again, fluctuating blood glucose levels make proper adjustments to your eyesight a very touchy subject. You can always change your glasses or contacts, but once Lasik surgery is done… It’s done. Finally, as diabetics well know, the healing process is somewhat slower.
Be completely open with your doctor when asking about Lasik surgery; particularly if you’re a diabetic.
