Diabetes is an increasingly prevalent disease in modern times and has been dubbed an epidemic by the World Health Organization (WHO). Although it is still unknown why the disease has increased so much recently, it is known how the disease occurs. It is caused by a malfunction of the beta cells that are located in the pancreas.

The beta cells produce a hormone, known as insulin, that helps to reduce the blood sugar level in the body. When a person has diabetes the beta cells are destroyed or the body has an inability to use insulin properly. Many people have this disease but are unaware of the fact. Many people that have it and are aware often mismanagement the treatment of the disease. This can lead to many problems. Immediate problems can include diabetic induced coma. In the long term there can be problems with the circulation, nervous and cardiovascular systems within the body. Part of the treatment of diabetes is by eating the proper foods and sticking to a diabetic diet. This article will discuss the issues involved with a diet for diabetes.

Carbohydrates make up a large part of many peoples diets because they provide energy, in the form of glucose, to the body. However too many carbohydrates will cause the blood sugar levels in a diabetic to get high and cause problems. Thus a diet for diabetes involves understanding how carbohydrates work. Much emphasis in a diabetic diet is on the amount of carbohydrates and calories that are consumed at each sitting.

Simply put, simple carbohydrates should be avoided or consumed as a treat or in an emergency. Simple carbohydrates include things like soft drinks, chocolate and sweets and candy. They are called simple because they are easy to break down in the body and get into the bloodstream quickly. This is why many people think that sweet foods are bad for diabetics. To an extent they are because they cause spikes in the blood sugar level but this too can be managed and at times (like hypoglycemia) an intake of sugar is needed.

The opposite of simple carbohydrates and complex carbohydrates. They are things like rolled oats that are harder to breakdown and let sugar into the bloodstream at a slower rate. Because of the slow breakdown, the blood sugar level is easier to manage which is the desired affect of any diabetic treatment.

Apart from watching the type of carbohydrates that are consumed, a diet for diabetes is a very healthy option that can benefit anyone. In fact, it is often the case that if one family member has diabetes the whole family can benefit form the types of foods that they eat which is an unlikely positive by product of the disease. The diet concentrates on eating fruits, vegetables and whole grains. The choices of foods are not limited and a person can follow the diabetic food pyramid for guidance. The food pyramid breaks foodstuffs down into carbohydrates, proteins and fats. It gives suggestions on the types of foods that fit into these categories and the amounts of each to be consumed each day. A diabetic diet also stresses the times that a person eats. They should always each at similar times each day and take a regular snack in between main meals.

A diet for diabetes will help you to manage your insulin levels and lower the risk of suffering from long term diabetic complications.

Having been diagnosed as diabetic, you feel that it’s the end of the road for your taste buds; bland food would be the norm from now on. If you really think so, then you are truly mistaken, for a proper diabetic diet plan would ensure that you also get to satisfy your tasty food cravings.

A diabetic diet plan for the start has to be well balanced. That effectively means that you can have most things but in a very regulated manner. Obviously, the emphasis would be more on fibrous diet and less on a diet that’s rich in carbohydrates and fats.

As you constantly have to keep track of your blood sugar levels, any irresponsible behavior (eating loads of junk food) can be disastrous. After all, your health is your prerogative.

The easiest way to keep your blood sugar levels at optimum levels would be by breaking up the three big meals (breakfast, lunch & dinner) into 5-6 smaller meals. This way you would ensure that the blood sugar levels are well within the permissible limits all through the day. Even the American Dietetic Association (ADA) recommends the small meal plan, the other important recommendation of ADA relates to the class of food products that are best for the diabetics. As per the ADA foods that have high starch content are best suited for the diabetics and they are starchy vegetables, black beans, corn etc.

Another important criteria while deciding on a diet plan – your life style. If you were the lazy bones type then the regimen would be stricter for you as compared to people who lead a very active life style. The little bit more leverage in diet plan offered by an active lifestyle can help you take that special second helping of your favorite dishes.

Diabetics is surely not unconquerable, all that you need is some amount of self-control and a very active lifestyle. And, for your taste buds, rely on great cookery books dedicated to diabetic diet plan recipes. They surely are Yummy!

Having a good diet plan is essential to maintaining good health after you have been diagnosed with diabetes. There are many misconceptions on how you will never be able to eat again after the diagnosis and that is not true and what must be kept in mind is a diet that will help you maintain the correct sugar levels in your blood. If you maintain a good sugar level then you can prevent the damage that can be caused by diabetes.

When looking for a diet that is best for you and one that limits the amount of sugar and carbohydrates is best. Keep in mind that the carbohydrates you eat turn into sugar once they are digested into your blood stream. When you are looking for the foods that are good for you then loos at food that are grown because these are an excellent source of nutrition. Starches in the form of wholegrain cereals and bread should be included in your diet. Healthy proteins is also very essential.

Maintaining a healthy weight is also very important and this is best accomplished by a healthy diet and a regimented exercise program. A good diet along with exercise will help to control your sugar to safe levels. Smoking and alcohol are not recommended when you are working to maintain a healthy diabetic lifestyle.

Dining out is an occasional indulgence for some people. For other people, it is a way of life. Whatever the case for you, careful choices and moderate portions will help you make dining out part of a wise overall plan for your diabetes nutrition.

1-Research the menus. Ask the waiter about recipes. Many restaurants include information about the nutrition values of their entrees. When this resource is available to you, take advantage of it. Research food or meal options at those establishments to make the healthiest choices possible.

2-Keep your helpings of food in check. Diabetes nutrition is based on moderate portions, so keep portion sizes in check. Large portions are the norm at many restaurants. How to control your portions. Always choose the smallest meal size if they offer you options. Share part of your meal with a dining partner or request a take-home container. Avoid “dangerous” places like all-you-can-eat buffets. Resist overeating will be surely hard with that many options. Small amounts of many different foods can obviously add up to a large calorie count.

3-Make substitutions. Choose for example a diabetes-friendly side salad or a double order of vegetable, instead of fries. Do not settle for what comes with your meal or sandwich with the eyes closed. Try a flavored vinegar or a squeeze of lemon juice on your salad, or use fat-free or low-fat salad dressing rather than the regular variety. Instead of shredded cheese and sour cream, ask for salsa with your burrito. On sandwiches, substitute mustard, ketchup, fat-free mayonnaise or a slice of tomato for the house dressings or creamy sauces.

4-Watch the “extras”. Keep in mind that the extras such as croutons, fried chips and bacon bits can undermine your diabetes nutrition goals by increasing the carb and calorie count. So watch the extras! Do not ever forget that all the additions have calories, even the healthier ones, like barbecue sauce, fat-free mayonnaise and salad dressings. Notwithstanding, you can enjoy small servings of these, without sabotaging your meal plan.

5-If possible, speak with the chef. Food preparation is also worth to consider. Avoid fried and breaded food. Instead request that your food be roasted, grilled or broiled. Whenever necessary and possible, ask if the chef can use skinless chicken, whole-grain bread and low-cholesterol eggs. If you are to order pizza, avoid doubling on meat or cheese, and request lots of vegetables and just a thin crust. Ask that no salt or MSG be added to your food if you are on a low-sodium diet. When you request healthier options and substitutions, do not feel like you are stepping out of line. You have the right to do it. You just try to stay committed to your meal plan, and you are simply doing what it takes to accomplish that.

6-Avoid high-calorie beverages. Watch what you drink. Keep an eye on the continuously refilled soda glass. Each glass of sugar-sweetened soda adds hundreds of calories to your meal. Ice-cream drinks and shakes may be even worse. They have more calories, as well as saturated fat. Instead, drink water, diet soda, sparkling water, mineral water or unsweetened iced tea.

7-Refrain from overdrinking alcohol. Alcohol is another crucial matter. Alcohol has its own caveats because it can worsen your diabetes. An occasional drink with a meal is fine, if your diabetes is under control and your doctor agrees. Remember that alcohol adds empty, non-nutritive calories to your meal. Diabetes complications, such as eye disease and nerve damage, might be the immediate consequences of drinking imprudently. Nevertheless, if you choose to drink alcohol, opt for light beer or dry wines, beverages with fewer calories and carbohydrates. Other options can be mixed drinks made with sugar-free mixers such as diet tonic, club soda, seltzer or diet soda. One or two drinks a day should be your limit, anyway.

8-Eat out at your usual time. Sometimes it is hard to maintain the blood sugar level steady, especially if one takes insulin shots or diabetes pills. Eating at the same time every day can help achieve that. Follow these steps if you are dining out with others:

+ Schedule the gathering at the time you usually eat.
+ Try to avoid times when the restaurant is busiest, or make a reservation to avoid waiting for a table for long periods.
+ If you cannot avoid dining out later than usual, snack on a starch serving or a fruit from the upcoming meal at your usual mealtime.

9-Save room for the afters. Sweets are not necessarily off-limits. Just remember that sweets count as carbohydrates in your meal. Reduce the amount of other carbohydrates in your meal, such as tortillas, rice, bread, potatoes or milk, if you would like dessert. Bottom line: the point is to never forget the principles of diabetes nutrition, whether you are at home or dining out. Limit the amount of carbohydrates, salt and fat in your diet. Eat a diversity of healthy foods. Responsibly follow the nutrition guidelines set by your dietitian or doctor. If you do that and work together with them, you can afford the joy of eating out without setting your meal plan aside.

With obesity levels being at an all time high, the epidemic of type 2 diabetes is growing at an alarming rate, and will only get worse. Between 2001 and 2002, the diagnosis of diabetes went from 5.5 percent of Americans to an alarming 6.5 percent. In just one year! It has continued to increase during the past 10 years at an increasing rate.

Overall, twelve million Americans have been diagnosed and another 5 million Americans have diabetes and don’t know it. And yet another 12 millions are on their way to type 2 diabetes because of impaired glucose levels. To reverse diabetes type 2 diet and exercise can benefit millions of suffering individuals battling the illness. Not knowing is the worst because risks of untreated diabetes type 1 puts a person at a terrible risk of complications including but not limited to blindness, amputations and ultimately death.

The stickler is, that type 2 diabetes is almost completely preventable. Doctor’ say eat less, eat better and exercise. The statistics confirm that there is an epidemic of overeating in America. Portions of food have significantly increased over the past 30 years so that daily caloric intake has risen dramatically. Ultimately, a healthy body weight means control of caloric intake. Using organic foods in the right combination is a natural diabetes treatment that can reverse the symptoms.

Statistically, people are now living longer, and it has been on the rise for years. But this will not continue if type 2 diabetes is not put under control. We are a gluttonous society and ultimately it is affecting how we live and how long we live. And unfortunately, the diabetes epidemic is not just a US problem. It is spreading worldwide with epidemic reports in Asia, the Middle East and the Caribbean.

It is estimated that by 2025, the number of diabetics worldwide will rise to 380 million. And diabetes is now affecting more of the young and middle-aged population in developing countries between the ages of 40 and 59. To reverse diabetes type 2 through healthy eating and living style can be accomplished and is key in reversing this trend.

All too often we get sick but ignore the symptoms we may be feeling, shrugging them off to a cold, stress from work, or just not feeling well. There are certain symptoms that shouldn’t be ignored if they develop. These symptoms could lead to blindness, amputation of limbs, coma or even death.

Symptoms of type 1 diabetes often come on suddenly and are severely dramatic. The extra stress of diabetes can lead to something called diabetic ketoacidosis. Symptoms of ketoacidosis may include nausea and vomiting, which may also lead to dehydration and serious problems with the blood levels of potassium. This could lead to a diabetic coma and ultimately death. Other symptoms of diabetes may include extreme fatigue. We all get tired at times, but diabetes triggers a more severe fatigue than normal. That is why it is essential to follow an appropriate type 2 diabetes diet.

People with diabetes also experience unexplained weight loss. This is because they are unable to process many of the calories they consume. Losing sugar and water in the urine also contributes to the weight loss. Extreme thirst is another symptom of diabetes. Diabetes develops high blood sugar levels and the body tries to compensate by diluting the blood, which translates to our brain that we are thirsty.

With this is also excessive urination. It is another way our bodies have of getting rid of the extra sugar in our system. But this can also lead to dehydration. This is why it is so important to get a healthy diet with an exercise program that can reverse the effects of these symptoms.

One of the hardest symptoms to deal with is poor wound healing. Wounds heal slowly, if at all when the carrier has diabetes. This along with infections that are not easily remedied can attribute to ulcers and loss of limbs. This is a very cruel aspect of severe diabetes. A type 2 diabetes diet can reverse diabetes with a consistent program of healthy diet with the right foods and increased exercise to help lose weight.

Diet plays a significant role in controlling the diabetes. The diabetes diet may be used alone or else in combination with well thought diet pill to ensure smooth movement of treatment. Main objective of diabetes diet is to maintain ideal body weight, by providing adequate required nutrition along with normal blood sugar levels in blood. The diabetes diet plan for a diabetic patient is generally based on the features like height, weight, age, sex, physical activity and nature of diabetes. While planning diabetes diet, the dietician has to consider complications such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol levels. Some times combination of diet pills and well designed diabetes diet is recommended for the treatment as per the patient conditions.

With respect to the above factors, a dietician will assess calories to be given in diabetes diet, like scheming the carbohydrates, proteins, fats, type of carbohydrate, amount of fiber and so on.

To generate the best results exchange current meal plan with a diabetic diet program which balances the amount of carbohydrate that we intake per day. Glucose is a sugar released from carbohydrate so, if we want to control blood sugar we have to limit the consumption of simple carbohydrate. You can plan for more flexible meals as you get more knowledge about the planed diabetes diet for a diabetic, may be like the counting carbohydrate meal plan or constant carbohydrate. But there is no common diet that works for everyone. Nor is there any particular diabetes diet that works perfectly for any diabetic patient over a long period. While planning diabetes diet keep below mentioned points in mind:

Fiber should be at least 1.4 oz / day Instead of 3 heavy meals, we should go for 4-5 small mid intervals Replace bakery products and fast foods by simple whole cooked cereals, and don’t eat carbohydrates 2 hours before bedtime Consume fresh fruit and vegetables at least 5 exchange/ day

Diabetics always need to take care of their recommended diabetes diet and also about the food they eat. Care has to be taken because all foods contain not only carbohydrate, but also some energy value. Protein and fat available in the food are converted to glucose in the body. This glucose has some effect on the blood sugar level, which has to be taken care of. Furthermore, you needn’t have to eat only the bland boring diet. Instead, you can eat more fruits, vegetables and whole grains. All it means is that you need to select foods that are high in nutrition and low in calories. If won’t be able eat recommended diet then can consult your dietician for diet pills.

So make sure you won’t be suffering form effects of diabetes with implementation of diabetes diet and diet pills as some one has intelligently said prevention is better than cure.

Diabetes is a very common disease and in the United States 20.8 million people or 7% of the population of both children and adults have some form of this disease. For those who have this disease it is good to know that it can be controlled with a few lifestyle changes. Unfortunately for many people changing their daily habits can be both hard and frustrating. The foods they have always enjoyed are off limits and are replaced with healthy foods that can take some getting used to. This is particularly true for people who have a sweet tooth and find giving up sugar to be a hard proposition.

Fortunately for people who have diabetes finding foods that help control their condition is easy with a little research and the help of a nutritionist. While your doctor may be the place to start with when it comes to treating and controlling your diabetes he or she may not be the most the up to date on the foods that you can and cannot eat. A licensed nutritionist is the way to go create a diabetic diet plan full of healthy foods that taste good.

Because diabetes is such a common disease there is a whole food industry built up around it offering many foods that are a match for even the most sugary treats to satisfy those with a sweet tooth. That means if you used to enjoy chocolate cakes chances are you will be able to find an artificially sweetened chocolate cake that will taste just as good as the real thing. With the advent of the many artificial sweeteners there are many options when it comes to creating a diabetic diet plan.

Even though you may no longer be able to enjoy all your favorite foods there are many foods options available to you. The American Diabetes Association has a wealth of resources available for people with diabetes including a comprehensive list of foods that diabetics can include in their diet plan. These include meats, vegetables, fruit, breads, dairy and fats.

Their website has this information readily available for free along with a multitude of other free resources across the World Wide Web. You can also find many books at your local book store with complete lists of diabetic foods and the diet plans you can use with them. When the sugary sweets and foods have to go because of diabetes one does not have to stop living and enjoying good tasting food.

Diabetics are generally advised to keep track of their diet as well as maintain a healthy exercise regime. It is important to monitor the intake of certain foods such as sugars and fats, though a healthy balance is also important. At times it may seem easier to buy packaged food for diabetics from supermarkets, though this is not always recommended.

When you are looking for diabetic foods in shops it is important to know what you are looking for before you buy. Everyone has different diet requirements and preferences so it would be a good idea to first talk it over with your doctor.

Diabetic foods in shops often use artificial sweeteners in place of sugar, following the commonly held (though mistaken) view that sugars should be cut completely in a diabetic diet. These sweeteners do have the benefit of a slower rise in blood glucose level after consumption, as well as the fact that these sweeteners do not contain calories like regular sugar. However, intake of such sweeteners and their value is highly debated by experts.

It is extremely important that you read labels carefully when shopping for diabetic food products, and take care not to be swept in by misleading statements such as ‘diet’ food. Diet food may or may not necessarily be lower in sugar or fat content so it is important to be alert.

Be careful when purchasing specially labeled food, as in most cases it may not offer a huge benefit whereas the price will be dramatically increased.ach and every week with our diabetic newsletter which will send diabetic recipes straight to your inbox every week for free.

Gestational diabetes is a disorder which will affect around 4% of all pregnant women in the United States. It is not entirely understood why some women get it because it normally disappears once the baby is born. One theory is that the stress of the pregnancy itself causes it, but whatever the cause any woman who is diagnosed with it will need to follow a gestational diabetes diet plan.

In fact this type of diet needs to be followed if an expectant mother has preexisting diabetes as well. The risk of fetal defects and even death are considerably higher with gestational diabetes. Hyperglycemia, or high blood sugar levels, in the mother is the primary cause of any problems caused by this condition. When this happens the fetus will begin to produce large amounts of insulin to deal with the excess glucose (sugar) that is crossing through the placenta.

Increased insulin levels in the fetus cause a condition known as macrosomia which results in larger than normal body and head size. It can also cause respiratory problems as well as hypocalcemia, hypoglycemia, hypokalemia, or jaundice in new born babies.

It is highly recommended that any woman diagnosed with gestational diabetes receive nutrition advice and create a diet plan with the help of a registered dietician. It is vitally important to control blood sugar levels during pregnancy and this best done by modifying the diet.

A gestational diabetes diet is individualized for each pregnancy based on the mother’s weight and height. It will also provide an adequate amount of calories and nutrients that are needed during pregnancy as well as controlling blood glucose levels. In addition the mother will need to self monitor her blood sugar levels at least four times a day to make sure her glucose levels are under control. Once good glucose control is established the frequency of self monitoring can be decreased but self monitoring should be continued during the entire pregnancy.

The diet plan should meet the desired weight gain and nutrition requirements needed for a normal pregnancy. For the first trimester weight gain should be in the 2 to 4 pound range and then an additional pound every week for the second and third trimesters. During the second trimester it is recommended that caloric intake be adjusted upwards approximately 100 to 300 kcal/day above that of the first trimester. Protein intake also needs to be increased during pregnancy to 10 grams per day either by drinking two glasses of milk or 1 to 2 ounces of meat. 400 ug/day of folic acid should also be included in the gestational diet to help avoid congenital and neural tube defects.

Diabetic ketoacidosis is a very real threat during a pregnancy so restricting calories should only be done under direct medical supervision. The minimum number of calories eaten per day must not be below 1700 to 1800 and these calories should come from foods of high nutritious value.

A gestational diabetes diet plan is a crucial part of any pregnancy for women who suffer from this dangerous condition. Any pregnant woman who is diagnosed with this disorder should be evaluated by a registered dietician who will then assist the woman to meet her dietary needs.
