Diabetes is an increasingly prevalent disease in modern times and has been dubbed an epidemic by the World Health Organization (WHO). Although it is still unknown why the disease has increased so much recently, it is known how the disease occurs. It is caused by a malfunction of the beta cells that are located in the pancreas.

The beta cells produce a hormone, known as insulin, that helps to reduce the blood sugar level in the body. When a person has diabetes the beta cells are destroyed or the body has an inability to use insulin properly. Many people have this disease but are unaware of the fact. Many people that have it and are aware often mismanagement the treatment of the disease. This can lead to many problems. Immediate problems can include diabetic induced coma. In the long term there can be problems with the circulation, nervous and cardiovascular systems within the body. Part of the treatment of diabetes is by eating the proper foods and sticking to a diabetic diet. This article will discuss the issues involved with a diet for diabetes.

Carbohydrates make up a large part of many peoples diets because they provide energy, in the form of glucose, to the body. However too many carbohydrates will cause the blood sugar levels in a diabetic to get high and cause problems. Thus a diet for diabetes involves understanding how carbohydrates work. Much emphasis in a diabetic diet is on the amount of carbohydrates and calories that are consumed at each sitting.

Simply put, simple carbohydrates should be avoided or consumed as a treat or in an emergency. Simple carbohydrates include things like soft drinks, chocolate and sweets and candy. They are called simple because they are easy to break down in the body and get into the bloodstream quickly. This is why many people think that sweet foods are bad for diabetics. To an extent they are because they cause spikes in the blood sugar level but this too can be managed and at times (like hypoglycemia) an intake of sugar is needed.

The opposite of simple carbohydrates and complex carbohydrates. They are things like rolled oats that are harder to breakdown and let sugar into the bloodstream at a slower rate. Because of the slow breakdown, the blood sugar level is easier to manage which is the desired affect of any diabetic treatment.

Apart from watching the type of carbohydrates that are consumed, a diet for diabetes is a very healthy option that can benefit anyone. In fact, it is often the case that if one family member has diabetes the whole family can benefit form the types of foods that they eat which is an unlikely positive by product of the disease. The diet concentrates on eating fruits, vegetables and whole grains. The choices of foods are not limited and a person can follow the diabetic food pyramid for guidance. The food pyramid breaks foodstuffs down into carbohydrates, proteins and fats. It gives suggestions on the types of foods that fit into these categories and the amounts of each to be consumed each day. A diabetic diet also stresses the times that a person eats. They should always each at similar times each day and take a regular snack in between main meals.

A diet for diabetes will help you to manage your insulin levels and lower the risk of suffering from long term diabetic complications.

When you have diabetes whether its diabetes type one or type two, you should be prepared to start making meal plans of what you will eat every day. Whilst main meals can become the focus of any diabetic diets, the truth is that meals throughout the day will need to be monitored. As well as eating three healthy meals, you may want to reduce the portions and start eating snacks throughout the day to help keep up a constant blood glucose level.

The start of any day should be with a healthy breakfast. It is essential to get going for the day, and it is important you do not skip breakfast. Before you were diagnosed with diabetes you may have had a certain routine of what you ate, and this may not need to be altered too much. Most breakfast cereals will be fine and healthy for you to eat as well as toast and breakfast muffins.

At breakfast time you will want to make sure that your appetite is satisfied, making porridge a great choice for your breakfast meal. You can also have a portion of fruit at this time to help contribute to your intake of fruit and veg and maintain a balanced diet. If you usually sweeten your food you should avoid this, but you can use fruit as a substitute for sugar. Fruit juice may not be the best option for the morning as it can help to affect your blood sugar levels quickly, so avoid it or limit the levels you drink.

Diabetic beware. See if this makes sense to you.

Let’s cut right to the chase. I am so amazed by this tactic.

Did you ever wonder why we as a culture are gaining so much weight? And we are seeing more and more teenagers with weight issues. More and more fast food restaurants being built. What do most of them have in common? You got it. Lots of soda. Think about a diet that includes soda. Not plastic soda with artificial sweeteners. But soda with sugar

Check this out

Driving to your favorite Burger King or Wendy’s or other fast food restaurant you start to think about what you will have to eat. Should I get the double burger or the salad? Should I start eating better today? As you enter the building your eyes transfix on those hanging in midair menus. You know the signs that state that if you purchase a bigger size you ONLY pay a few cents extra. Forget about that salad. That is for another day.

Here is the con. Can you see it coming?

That super sized meal sure looks good. All that added food and drink for a modest amount of coin. You are now the owner of a plastic glass that you can use over and over again to refill on soda. Did you win first prize?

You have paid the price. That is costing you your health. This diabetes diet is one that will keep you unfit.

More soda equals potentially more diabetes and other problems. These fast food restaurants are giving the beverage away to lure you and me into their stores. It is such a bargain and who doesn’t like a sale?

Bigger is not always better. Especially when it comes to fast food, and huge drinks. Could the super sizing of America be partly responsible for outbreak in the diabetes disease? Maybe just maybe.

Hopefully this article made some sense and your view about soda and super sizing meals hits home for you.

I have been the super sizer. I could not get enough soda or fries to eat. Maybe those were two of the reasons I ended up as a diabetic. But I am learnig to eat in ways that will help me. If learning from someone that has been a diabetic for over 19 years and lost over 100 pounds makes sense to you then listen to The Diabetic Warriors MP3. It’s free and it provides some practical steps to controlling diabetes.

This dessert recipe will definitely impress your family, friends, co-workers, mother-in-law, etc. They will think you really worked hard but you and I know differently and guess what–I’ll never tell! And here is another secret just between us; you can make it diabetic friendly and most would never know the difference. To make this dessert diabetic friendly here’s all you need to do. 1.) Use sugar-free vanilla wafers. 2.) Use sugar-free instant pudding mix. 3.)Replace the brown sugar with 2 tablespoons plus 2 teaspoons of Splenda’s Brown Sugar Blend.

PRALINE WAFER DESSERT

This recipe is cut from an old Keebler magazine advertisement.

45 Keebler Vanilla Wafers
1/2 cup flaked coconut
1/3 cup chopped pecans
1/3 cup brown sugar, packed
3 tbsps butter or margarine
1 pkg instant vanilla pudding mix
1 1/2 cups milk
1 cup heavy cream, whipped

Arrange 21 whole Vanilla Wafers in the bottom of a 9-inch springform pan. Cut a slight portion off of each remaining Vanilla Wafer forming a straight edge. Place those wafers, cut side down, around the edge of the springform pan lapping them slightly in a clockwise fashion.

Combine the coconut, pecans, brown sugar, and butter or margarine in a skillet. Cook over low heat, stirring constantly, until butter or margarine is melted. Continue to cook and stir until the mixture brwons lightly (about 5 minutes). Pour mixture onto a baking sheet to cool. When cool, break the coconut into coarse crumbles. Reserve 1/2 cup of the crumbles and set aside. Sprinkle the remaining crumbs over the Vanilla Wafer base.

Prepare pudding with milk as directed on the package. Fold in the whipped cream. Turn into the pan, spreading mixture gently to the edges of the standing wafers. Sprinkle the reserved crumbs over the top. Chill 4 hours or overnight. Cut into wedges to serve.

Yield: 6 to 8 servings.

Note: This is a great “make ahead dessert” for a busy day since it needs to refrigerate as long as overnight anyway.

A Medical News Today report was headlined “Tai Chi Can Help Control Type 2 Diabetes.”

It described a study reported in the British Medical Journal suggesting that Tai Chi may improve blood glucose metabolism, cause a fall in blood glucose levels, and initiate a reduction in the inflammatory response.

The article states, “The findings of the study indicate that regular Tai Chi Chuan exercise improves T cell helper function of patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus with an increase in T-bet transcription factor and IL-12 production.

“T cells are a vital constituent of the body’s immune system, which generate powerful chemicals, including interleukins (ILs), which alter the immune response.”

Tai Chi has many qualities that could be good for those with diabetes. Tai Chi promotes microcirculation because of its gentle relaxed effortless movements. It is also one of the most effective stress reduction exercises known. Stress aggravates all health challenges, and definitely aggravates diabetic conditions.

However Tai Chi’s side effects are as important as the above type 2 diabetes research, for a UCLA study found that Tai Chi is a powerful insomnia treatment, and also Tai Chi can boost the immune system’s resistence to viral infection. Why is this important? Because insomnia and illness strain the body, and a strained body suffering from something like type 2 diabetes already is less strong. This isn’t rocket science.

So when someone with type 2 diabetes practices Tai Chi for the blood glucose metabolism improvement, and the reduction in blood glucose levels, and reduction in inflammatory response benefits Tai Chi can provide, they also enjoy better sleep and improved immune function, thereby having less overall stress on the body and mind, and therefore improving their entire life system’s strength on many levels.

But, the side-effects of Tai Chi are vast and wide. At www.worldtaichiday.org you’ll find a Medical Research Library that lists nearly 100 common health issues that medical research is showing Tai Chi may help with. So if you use Tai Chi for one thing, dozens of other benefits may come your way as side-effects. Pretty good deal, don’t you agree?

This Tai Chi Medical Research Library is the most popular such resource in the world, so if you simply google “tai chi medical research” it should come up at the top of the first page.

Share it with your health care provider, but also with friends and loved ones who may have health challenges they can look up there to see how Tai Chi may help them.

Also at www.worldtaichiday.org you’ll find free video lessons of Tai Chi and Qigong Sitting Relaxation Meditations that have helped people worldwide.

What’s better than a good cup of coffee? The answer is a good cup of coffee with a great slice of coffee cake! So go ahead, dig out your favorite book, slip in your favorite movie, put on your favorite music, or just head out to the patio to watch the sunset or sunrise. But before you do that, grab a big mug of excellent coffee and a piece of coffee cake. Here are a couple of recipes that even diabetics can enjoy without guilt. Whether you choose Raspberry Swirl or Blueberry Lemon, you are sure to enjoy.

RASPBERRY SWIRL COFFEE CAKE

2 cups all-purpose flour

1/2 cup Splenda granular

1/4 cup sugar

2 tsp baking powder

1/4 tsp salt

1 egg

1 cup sugar-free raspberry yogurt

1/2 cup butter, melted

1 tsp vanilla extract

1/2 cup chopped almonds, toasted

1/2 cup seedless, sugar-free raspberry preserves, divided

2 tbsp sliced almonds, toasted

In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt. In another mixing bowl, whicsk the egg, yogurt, butter and vanilla until blended; stir into dry ingredients just until moistened. Stir in the chopped almonds. Pour batter into a greased 9-inch springform pan. Drop 1/3 cup of preserves over the batter by tablespoonfuls; cut through with a knife to swirl. Sprinkle with the sliced almonds. Bake at 350 degrees for 40 to 45 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Cool on a wire rack for 10 minutes; remove sides of pan. In a small pan or microwave, heat the remaining preserves and drizzle on serving plates with the cake.

Yield: 10 to 12 servings

BLUEBERRY LEMON COFFEE CAKE

Note: This recipe is adapted from one I saw in an old Taste of Home’s Quick Cooking magazine.

1 egg, slightly beaten

1/3 cup minus 1 tbsp Splenda

1 tbsp sugar

1 tsp grated lemon peel

2/3 cup milk

2 1/4 cups biscuit/baking mix

1 cup fresh blueberries

3/4 cup sugar-free powdered sugar*

4 tsp lemon juice

In a mixing bowl, combine egg, Splenda, sugar, lemon peel and milk, mixing well. Stir in the baking mix just until moistened. Carefully fold in the blueberries. Pour into a greased 9-inch round baking pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 25 to 30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Cool for 10 minutes, then remove from pan.

To make the frosting drizzle, combine the powdered sugar and lemon juice. Mix until smooth. Drizzle over warm cake.

Note: Frozen blueberries may be used but do not thaw before using.
