Managing it with the correct diet is of the utmost importance. Growing your own fruits and veggies with which to do so can be fun, save money and guarantee the quality of at least some of the foods you put in your body.

Starches and Veggies Are Our Friends

You may have a rough time growing grains and potatoes in your home (even with the right grow lights and humidity control) but if you’re growing on a larger scale, say a green house, you may be able to pull it off. Starches are an extremely important part of a healthy diet for a diabetic. Veggies grow well indoors with the appropriate care and atmosphere. The most beneficial veggies that you can grow indoors are: peppers, tomatoes, carrots, green beans, broccoli, spinach and cabbage.

Vitamins, Minerals and Fiber; 4 Servings Each Day

Do your best to at least have 2 servings each day if 4 are a bit much for you. Fruit trees can be a little dicey to grow indoors, but it can be done. Grapefruit, oranges, mangos, bananas and apples are essential parts of a healthy diet for anyone; particularly a diabetic. Weight loss is also a big factor for many of today’s diabetics. Eating a fresh vegetable or piece of fruit that you have grown yourself instead of snacking on fattening chips or sugary candy can help maintain your blood sugar level and also assist in weight loss. Especially for diabetics it is important to eat as much fruit and vegetables as humanly possible while still keeping close track of blood sugar levels. Fresh homegrown and healthy foods go great with our daily meals and can help every one of us get fit, stay fit and feel better.

Kick it up a notch like Emeril says (BAM!) and make a healthy broccoli dip that even the most manly of men will be able to appreciate!

Prep time: 2-3 hours

Serves: 6-8

Ingredients:

- Two cups of broccoli florets, stems chopped off

- One or two cloves of garlic, chopped finely

- ½ cup of basil leaves

- ¼ of a cup of walnuts

- Freshly ground pepper (black)

- Three to four tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil

- ¼ of a cup of grated parmesan cheese

- Salt to taste (if so desired)

Directions:

Place broccoli, basil, nuts and garlic into a food processor or your blender.

Add four to five grinds of pepper and puree until the broccoli is finely ground but still a little bit grainy.

With the processer or blender still running, drizzle in just enough oil to make the mixture spreadable or soft enough to use as a dip.

Scrape down the sides of the bowl and blend another 15 seconds longer.

Transfer pesto into a bowl and mix in the cheese.

Season to taste (with salt if you so desire).

Cover tightly and refrigerate two hours before serving to help allow all of the flavors to meld together. (Pesto will keep up to two days if stored in a tightly covered container)

Use with crostini or as a dip with fresh veggies. Enjoy!

If you have been diagnosed with type two diabetes, it is of utmost importance that you quit smoking, lose weight and eat an appropriate type 2 diabetes diet.

For many people, stop smoking, shedding pounds and eating a proper diet is much easier said than done. For some quitting smoking is almost out of the question while for others the complications from diabetes makes it difficult for them to lose weight.

However, it is very vital for those that have type II diabetes to stick to a balanced healthy diet.

Sticking to a diet that is designed specifically to help manage type 2 diabetes can be critical to a long and healthy life.

Foods that are high in carbohydrates are directly associated with blood glucose levels. People with type 2 diabetes should keep their blood glucose levels down by limiting the intake of foods that are rich in carbohydrates.

Sometimes it is very easy to know if a certain food contains a lot of carbohydrates. Foods such as chocolates, white breads, baked goods and candies that are high in sugar typically have a high carbohydrate count. People who are trying to stick to a type 2 diabetes diet should keep themselves away from foods that have a high carbohydrate count.

There are other foods such as apples, bananas, yogurts, potatoes and yams that contain carbohydrates known as complex carbohydrates. Complex carbohydrates are much better if compared to the ones that you get from foods high in sugar.

Since complex carbohydrates don’t break down as fast as other types they don’t affect the blood glucose levels as much. It is imperative that people who suffer from type 2 diabetes stick to foods that are have complex carbohydrates, rather than carbohydrates from fructose.

For those who are on a type 2 diabetes diet, lots of vegetables are needed. The diet should also contain lots of protein from lean cuts of meat and eggs. It is also crucial that people with type two diabetes eat fruits and dairy products to create a balanced diet.

Exercise is significant to those with diabetes. Exercise like taking your dog for a walk, playing basketball with your kids, or joining a yoga class at your local recreation center is so important because it can help to increase the sensitivity to insulin in the body.

Following a proper type 2 diabetes diet and leading an active lifestyle are both effective ways to manage the type 2 diabetes diabetes.

Sadly one of the worst things that have come out of the type 2 diabetes diet problems is the emphasis on sugar. Sugar did not give you diabetes. Diabetes is now a disease that was given to you. Often the diabetic is looked at as a fat slob who ate themselves into diabetes. This is not the case for the large majority of those who are diabetic. The mentality towards the diabetic is you stuffed yourself now you must pay the penalty and not enjoy good tasting food. This is a terrible dilemma for a lot of diabetics. It is important to remember that diabetes is something that has become a worldwide explosion.

It does not make sense to think that all of a sudden the whole world just when sugar crazy. As for diet, it is important for a diabetic to get some exercise but it is important for everyone to get some exercise. The problem with emphasizing that the diabetic get exercise can lead one to think that the lack of exercise caused the disease. Exercise can also give you a false sense of being healthy. Many athletes do not realize that they have type 2 diabetes until they start getting symptoms of the illness. It often comes as a surprise to the people who have just healthy bodies on the outside. Afterwards they are often placed on a type 2 diabetes diet with the hope of lowering the blood sugar.

Often with the type 2 diabetes diet the first thing you hear about is getting rid of the sugar. Sugar is important; sugar is the fuel that drives the energy of the blood. The problem is the pancreas not the sugar. It is like saying that your car has a bad gas tank so I guess I will drive without gas. Sugar is a carbohydrate that the body uses as its main fuel. It will take a strong mental determination if you are to stop diabetes, it is important to start with the right attitude. When you start your type 2 diabetes diet like the one mentioned above, remember that is not your fault tha you have thi disease.

Diabetes mellitus is due to an excess level of sugar in the blood. Also known as sugar diabetes, diabetes mellitus is very common and tends to run in families. The disease affects millions of Americans because of poor diet and because most Americans are not aware of how to control their blood sugar levels. The good news is that all this can change only if people knew how to eat right, thus, the American diabetic diet.

The fundamental problem in diabetes mellitus is the body’s inability to metabolize glucose, a common form of sugar, fully and continually. This is a vital process in creating body cell energy. Glucose is a chemical derivative of the carbohydrates in foods after they have been ingested. Glucose is stored under normal conditions in the form of glycogen, or animal starch, in the liver and muscles for later use, at which time it is converted to glucose. Essentially, diabetic control depends upon the proper interaction of the following three factors: diet, insulin or hypoglycemic pills, and exercise.

The diet is prescribed on the basis of the person’s size, weight, age, and occupation. The balanced diabetic diet should contain the following nutrients: calculated quantities of carbohydrates, protein, and fats, normal amounts of vitamins and minerals, and no more than 100 grams of fat, principally drawn from the polyunsaturated fat group.

The American diabetic diet recommends that we get 50-60 percent of our calories from carbohydrates, 12-20 percent from proteins, and less than 30 percent from fats. This is necessary to keep a balanced level of blood glucose.

Moreover, the American Diabetic Association advocates the exchange measured diet. The exchange method is based upon the premise that foods which contain the same food value can be exchanged with another without altering the person’s basic dietary prescription.

Being diagnosed with diabetes can indeed be devastating. But then again, adhering to the prescribed diabetic diet, as well as having a more active lifestyle, will help make managing diabetes mellitus an easy task.

There are approximately 1 million new patients diagnosed with diabetes each year in the United States and over 200,000 deaths attributed to the disease. If you have recently been one of the patients diagnosed, you want to do everything you cannot to be one of the 200,000 reported casualties. For this reason, you should follow a diabetic diet to keep your diabetes under control.

When buying the food that are needed for a diabetic diet, it is important to read the labels, it is especially important since most food labels show daily values based on a 2,000 calorie diet. This is higher than most diabetic diets allow for. Therefore, the values given will need to be recalculated into grams and calories and adjust that into their own diet plan.

Because diabetes is such a widespread problem in the United States, learning more about the principles of the American diabetic diet is beneficial for those who have the diseases as well as those who want to prevent developing problems down the road.

Importance of American Diabetic Diet

According to the American Diabetes Association, diabetes is the fifth most deadly disease in American, affecting nearly 21 million Americans. This staggering number represents an estimated 7 percent of the United States population. Many people with diabetes are undiagnosed, and often go untreated until serious health-related problems develop.

Anyone who has diabetes or is at risk for developing diabetes is well served by following a diabetic diet. The principles of how a person with diabetes should eat in many ways echo the healthy eating habits that everyone should strive to develop, whether impacted by this disease or not.

Diabetes Food Pyramid

The American Diabetes association recommends that those observing an American diabetic diet utilize its Diabetes Food Pyramid, which differs from the USDA Food Guide Pyramid, as a guideline for planning meals.

Foods are not grouped in terms of how they are classified within a particular food group. Instead, the Diabetes Food Pyramid groups foods based on their composition in terms of carbohydrates and protein. For this reason, diabetics must develop a solid understanding of the diabetic exchange system.

Individuals who utilize this pyramid to guide their food choices will consume approximately 1,600 to 2,800 calories each day, depending on the number of servings consumed.

Pyramid Recommendations Beans, grains, and starches (6 – 11 servings daily) Vegetables (3 – 5 servings daily) Fruit (2 – 4 servings daily) Dairy (2 – 3 servings daily) Meats, Meat Substitutes, and Proteins (4 – 6 ounces per day) Oils, Fats, Sweets, Alcohol (consume only in small quantities – consider them treats) Other Factors to Consider

The food pyramid doesn’t paint a complete picture of the best American diabetic diet. There are several other factors to consider when eating to control or prevent this disease.
