No, this is not about the current residents of the White House. I’m talking about the fact that obesity and type ll diabetes, which frequently go hand in hand, are running rampant in these United States.

Insulin Isn’t Enough

Of course you want to keep track of your blood sugar levels and you need to take your insulin or whatever medication your doctor has prescribed. But that’s not enough. You have to figure out how to lose weight at home. The proper diet can make all the difference in the world. By exercising and eating healthy, many type ll diabetes sufferers no longer need to take medication. They are for all intents and purposes cured.

If Your Home Environment Isn’t Conducive To Losing Weight

Being on a diet and finding time to exercise at home can be hard. The kids don’t want to eat your healthy foods and demand all your attention. Joining a gym with a friend may be the solution to how to build muscle and lose fat, thereby helping to treat not only obesity but your type ll diabetes as well.

Whether it is type l or type ll diabetes, healthy eating habits and regular exercise can only help your situation.

Eating healthy during this time is going to have to be a lifestyle change. With diabetes you don’t have the room to mess around with your health or your eating habits.

Ways To Eat Healthy

It really isn’t that hard to eat healthy you just have to take some time and preparation. Planning your meals is one way to eat very healthy because everything is scheduled and all you have to do is basically just stick to the schedule. If you have experienced any type of weight gain, then more than likely you will end up losing a few pounds.

Menopause Can Be Very Uncomfortable

Hot flashes are something that women going through menopause always complain about. You might consider going online and doing searches for natural remedies to help with the hot flashes. You are not the only one in this situation, so you are going to hear several different ways of how people cope.
A happy healthy balance of food and exercise should help your diabetes, and reduce all of the symptoms of menopause and weight gain. Your body will be feeling much better, and your mind will also be very clear and stress-free from healthy eating.

Managing it with the correct diet is of the utmost importance. Growing your own fruits and veggies with which to do so can be fun, save money and guarantee the quality of at least some of the foods you put in your body.

Starches and Veggies Are Our Friends

You may have a rough time growing grains and potatoes in your home (even with the right grow lights and humidity control) but if you’re growing on a larger scale, say a green house, you may be able to pull it off. Starches are an extremely important part of a healthy diet for a diabetic. Veggies grow well indoors with the appropriate care and atmosphere. The most beneficial veggies that you can grow indoors are: peppers, tomatoes, carrots, green beans, broccoli, spinach and cabbage.

Vitamins, Minerals and Fiber; 4 Servings Each Day

Do your best to at least have 2 servings each day if 4 are a bit much for you. Fruit trees can be a little dicey to grow indoors, but it can be done. Grapefruit, oranges, mangos, bananas and apples are essential parts of a healthy diet for anyone; particularly a diabetic. Weight loss is also a big factor for many of today’s diabetics. Eating a fresh vegetable or piece of fruit that you have grown yourself instead of snacking on fattening chips or sugary candy can help maintain your blood sugar level and also assist in weight loss. Especially for diabetics it is important to eat as much fruit and vegetables as humanly possible while still keeping close track of blood sugar levels. Fresh homegrown and healthy foods go great with our daily meals and can help every one of us get fit, stay fit and feel better.

Any individual with diabetics interested in losing weight and keeping their body healthy should consider their task on multiple levels. Certainly, there is the technical and mechanical aspect of performing the correct exercises, eating the right foods, and training your body in the most beneficial and satisfying ways, but there is also the less considered aspect of mental preparation and sound spiritual framework.

There is a wide body of magazine and health journal literature that focuses on preparing an athlete or an individual for the rigors of a training regimen by seemingly trying to ‘cure’ them of the difficulties and the failures they will no doubt face, but this is not the right way to train. Any individual currently living with diabetes knows that there is more to life than simply succeeding and doing well. Like battling the disease itself, battling a workout routine and a new diet will be filled with achievements as well as failures and setbacks; the key is to continue moving forward. Ultimately, it is just your weight, but the success and self-confidence that you can earn through working out and eating right can be carried over to the rest of your life and into your fight against diabetes.

First, you should consider the technical and mechanical aspects of choosing the right exercise regime and the right diet for yourself. In this writer’s opinion, the best workout and meal-plan is the one that satisfies you, challenges you, and, more often than not, makes you glad that you are doing what you are doing. There are a few general guidelines that you should follow. In choosing a workout routine, try to do at least as much cardiovascular exercise as you do strength training. If you lift weights two times a week, go for a jog two days as well. When it comes to diet, focus less on the type of food you are eating (it seems like the ‘right food’ changes weekly, anyway) and instead try to control the amount of food that you eat. This is a surprisingly difficult thing to do, but if you can cut down your meal size by just a small amount each day, after several (2-9) weeks you should be able to comfortably eat the FDA recommended caloric intake per day.

Anyone not training to be a professional athlete should not expect themselves to be in perfect condition at all times, nor should they expect that their workouts constantly be an exhausting challenge. Likewise, you should not expect to come away from the gym with a bright smile on your face every time you workout. Certainly, working-out can feel like a great thing to do, but it is not the case that if you leave the gym feeling tired and sore, and not beaming, that you need to immediately change your routine.

If you are retired or have parents that are retired and are diabetic you may want to look into some of the assisted living options out there today. Many of these communities will have gyms located within the community that you or your loved ones can go to and get the much needed exercise to help fight your diabetes.

As a diabetic, you know that the challenges of life do not come with a ‘satisfaction-guaranteed’ sticker- there are some obstacles that take a lot of you, and there is rarely ever an expectation of complete success. But if you keep your eyes on the long-term goal of health success, you should be able to weather any setback that comes your way.

With a proper diet and regular exercise diabetes can not only be maintained, some even say that it can be reversed. For those suffering from this disease we talk about exercise not only as a means of weight reduction but because exercise, particularly aerobic exercise, increases insulin sensitivity and, along with proper nutrition, helps restore normal glucose metabolism by decreasing body fat. If you are suffering from Type 2 diabetes and are overweight it is recommended that you begin with low-impact exercises such as walking or stationary cycling. Another form of exercise, strength or weight training, also decreases body fat by raising the metabolism. Its main benefit for diabetics however is increasing glucose uptake by the muscles and enhancing the ability to store glucose. Exercise can mean the difference between “medical management” and “lifestyle management” of Type 2 diabetes.

Exercise doesn’t have to be strenuous to be beneficial, but it’s recommended that you spend at least 30 minutes a day engaged in some type of physical activity regardless if it is walking, gardening, swimming, or even running. Prior to beginning any exercise regimen it is recommended that you discuss it with your physician before hand to ensure there would be no medical complications. For example, if you have active retinopathy, your doctor may discourage you from participating in high-impact sports (jogging, diving, boxing), since they may precipitate bleeding into the eye.

The best time to exercise is one to three hours after eating, when your blood sugar level is likely to be higher. Measuring your blood-glucose level before and after exercise can be a motivator. If you use insulin, it’s important to test your blood sugar before exercising. If the level before exercise is below 100 mg/dL, eating a piece of fruit or having a small snack will boost it and help you avoid hypoglycemia. Testing again 30 minutes later will show whether your blood glucose level is stable. Diabetics who play the “numbers game” commonly see a twenty percent decrease in their blood-glucose level after exercising. It is important to always wear a medical alert bracelet in case of any accident that may occur. This lets others know that you have diabetes and whether you take insulin. Also keep hard candy or glucose tablets with you while exercising in case your blood sugar drops precipitously.

If you have diabetes, there is no such thing a “just a little blister”. An open sore can turn into a serious infection. Prior to exercising it is vital to make sure you have properly fitting footwear due to potential nerve damage that can affect your feet. Nerve damage in extremities can result in peripheral neuropathy, which may make your feet less sensitive to irritation and pain. As a result, you may not be aware of the discomfort of ill-fitting shoes, or you may not realize that you have suffered a foot injury, allowing the situation to worsen. Shoes should be comfortable, well-fitting and appropriate for the chosen exercise. Before putting on the shoes, check for pebbles or other small objects inside. Smooth, not nubby socks should be worn during exercise and changed after a workout. Sweaty socks increase the chance of getting athlete’s foot. Feet are to be checked daily for scratches, cuts, blisters, ingrown toenails, corns, and calluses. Immediately contact a doctor for ingrown toenails, athlete’s foot, and cuts or sores that are not healing.

It is crucial that the exercise be fun and there is some variety. With a proper diet and regular exercise diabetes can be reversed.

Regardless if you have diabetes exercise is helpful for all individuals. Even if you have had diabetic complications you can definitely benefit from exercise.

If you have diabetes exercise is important for your heart health as well as weight loss; it will lower your high blood pressure, and, in some cases, improve blood sugar control as well as leading to an overall sense of well-being. If you are pre-diabetic or have risk factors it can even help prevent type 2 diabetes in some people.

Please remember that it’s important to have both enthusiasm and common sense when you are starting an exercise program. If you are diabetic it is important to practice these precautions in order to stay safe and ensure that your exercise program is productive.

Wear well-fitting, protective footwear. Drink plenty of liquids before, during, and after exercise to prevent dehydration, which can upset blood sugar levels.

If you use insulin you should also:

Monitor your blood sugar before, during, and after exercise to determine your body’s typical response to exercise. If you have a reading of 250 mg/dL (13.9 mmol/L) or higher you should wait until your levels are under control before you exercise. Talk with your physician about the possibility of decreasing your insulin dose by about 30 percent during exercise. Choose an insulin injection site away from exercising muscles (for example, avoid the legs if running) Keeping rapidly absorbed carbohydrates on hand (glucose tablets, hard candies, or juice). Eat a snack 15 to 30 minutes before exercise, and again every 30 minutes during exercise. Eat a source of slowly absorbed carbohydrates (dried fruit, fruit jerky, granola bars, or trail mix) immediately after exercise. This should counteract a possible post-exercise drop in your blood sugar levels.

It is important to select an exercise program that is enjoyable to you and can be done comfortably, this will make it easier to stay motivated and stick with a program over time. If you have had a sedentary lifestyle you might find it difficult to start and continue with an exercise program.

If you have diabetic eye complications (proliferative retinopathy) I recommend you avoid high-impact activities and strenuous weight-lifting, which may increase your blood pressure and cause bleeding in the eye. If you have neurologic complications (peripheral neuropathy) it is recommended that you avoid running which may lead to foot ulcers and stress fractures.
