Any individual with diabetics interested in losing weight and keeping their body healthy should consider their task on multiple levels. Certainly, there is the technical and mechanical aspect of performing the correct exercises, eating the right foods, and training your body in the most beneficial and satisfying ways, but there is also the less considered aspect of mental preparation and sound spiritual framework.

There is a wide body of magazine and health journal literature that focuses on preparing an athlete or an individual for the rigors of a training regimen by seemingly trying to ‘cure’ them of the difficulties and the failures they will no doubt face, but this is not the right way to train. Any individual currently living with diabetes knows that there is more to life than simply succeeding and doing well. Like battling the disease itself, battling a workout routine and a new diet will be filled with achievements as well as failures and setbacks; the key is to continue moving forward. Ultimately, it is just your weight, but the success and self-confidence that you can earn through working out and eating right can be carried over to the rest of your life and into your fight against diabetes.

First, you should consider the technical and mechanical aspects of choosing the right exercise regime and the right diet for yourself. In this writer’s opinion, the best workout and meal-plan is the one that satisfies you, challenges you, and, more often than not, makes you glad that you are doing what you are doing. There are a few general guidelines that you should follow. In choosing a workout routine, try to do at least as much cardiovascular exercise as you do strength training. If you lift weights two times a week, go for a jog two days as well. When it comes to diet, focus less on the type of food you are eating (it seems like the ‘right food’ changes weekly, anyway) and instead try to control the amount of food that you eat. This is a surprisingly difficult thing to do, but if you can cut down your meal size by just a small amount each day, after several (2-9) weeks you should be able to comfortably eat the FDA recommended caloric intake per day.

Anyone not training to be a professional athlete should not expect themselves to be in perfect condition at all times, nor should they expect that their workouts constantly be an exhausting challenge. Likewise, you should not expect to come away from the gym with a bright smile on your face every time you workout. Certainly, working-out can feel like a great thing to do, but it is not the case that if you leave the gym feeling tired and sore, and not beaming, that you need to immediately change your routine.

If you are retired or have parents that are retired and are diabetic you may want to look into some of the assisted living options out there today. Many of these communities will have gyms located within the community that you or your loved ones can go to and get the much needed exercise to help fight your diabetes.

As a diabetic, you know that the challenges of life do not come with a ‘satisfaction-guaranteed’ sticker- there are some obstacles that take a lot of you, and there is rarely ever an expectation of complete success. But if you keep your eyes on the long-term goal of health success, you should be able to weather any setback that comes your way.

Gestational diabetes is a condition that is usually diagnosed during pregnancy. A mother who has never had diabetes can sometimes develop high blood sugar (glucose) levels during pregnancy.

Although the exact cause of the development of gestational diabetes is not certain, it is believed that the developing placenta may produce hormones that block the mother’s insulin action. This can cause her to be unable to produce enough insulin to change glucose into energy and leave the blood. Most women with a reasonable risk for gestational diabetes are tested when they are 24 -28 weeks pregnant. An oral glucose tolerance test is given to measure the blood sugar level.

How is Gestational Diabetes Treated?

If a woman is diagnosed with gestational diabetes she can still give birth to a healthy child provided she follows her doctor’s advice.

Maintains a healthy weight

Follows a healthy exercise regime

Eats a healthy diet which usually involves limiting carbohydrates

If prescribed, takes medications regularly, usually this means insulin.

Monitors blood sugar levels regularly.

Also women who suffer from gestational diabetes are at an increased risk for developing other complications such as high blood pressure, which is know as preeclampsia, during pregnancy. Your healthcare professional should monitor you carefully for any problems that may arise. You should also be checked after pregnancy while your body recovers.

The Risks to Babies Born to Mother’s with Gestational Diabetes

One side effect of babies born to mothers with gestational diabetes is that sometimes they are much larger than normal babies at birth. This may result in the necessity for a cesarean section birth as opposed to a normal vaginal delivery. Also some babies suffer from a yellowing or jaundice condition of the skin. Babies can also suffer from low blood sugar levels, this is called hypoglycemia, an intravenous glucose solution or breastfeeding can help normalize the baby’s sugar levels.

With a proper diet and regular exercise diabetes can not only be maintained, some even say that it can be reversed. For those suffering from this disease we talk about exercise not only as a means of weight reduction but because exercise, particularly aerobic exercise, increases insulin sensitivity and, along with proper nutrition, helps restore normal glucose metabolism by decreasing body fat. If you are suffering from Type 2 diabetes and are overweight it is recommended that you begin with low-impact exercises such as walking or stationary cycling. Another form of exercise, strength or weight training, also decreases body fat by raising the metabolism. Its main benefit for diabetics however is increasing glucose uptake by the muscles and enhancing the ability to store glucose. Exercise can mean the difference between “medical management” and “lifestyle management” of Type 2 diabetes.

Exercise doesn’t have to be strenuous to be beneficial, but it’s recommended that you spend at least 30 minutes a day engaged in some type of physical activity regardless if it is walking, gardening, swimming, or even running. Prior to beginning any exercise regimen it is recommended that you discuss it with your physician before hand to ensure there would be no medical complications. For example, if you have active retinopathy, your doctor may discourage you from participating in high-impact sports (jogging, diving, boxing), since they may precipitate bleeding into the eye.

The best time to exercise is one to three hours after eating, when your blood sugar level is likely to be higher. Measuring your blood-glucose level before and after exercise can be a motivator. If you use insulin, it’s important to test your blood sugar before exercising. If the level before exercise is below 100 mg/dL, eating a piece of fruit or having a small snack will boost it and help you avoid hypoglycemia. Testing again 30 minutes later will show whether your blood glucose level is stable. Diabetics who play the “numbers game” commonly see a twenty percent decrease in their blood-glucose level after exercising. It is important to always wear a medical alert bracelet in case of any accident that may occur. This lets others know that you have diabetes and whether you take insulin. Also keep hard candy or glucose tablets with you while exercising in case your blood sugar drops precipitously.

If you have diabetes, there is no such thing a “just a little blister”. An open sore can turn into a serious infection. Prior to exercising it is vital to make sure you have properly fitting footwear due to potential nerve damage that can affect your feet. Nerve damage in extremities can result in peripheral neuropathy, which may make your feet less sensitive to irritation and pain. As a result, you may not be aware of the discomfort of ill-fitting shoes, or you may not realize that you have suffered a foot injury, allowing the situation to worsen. Shoes should be comfortable, well-fitting and appropriate for the chosen exercise. Before putting on the shoes, check for pebbles or other small objects inside. Smooth, not nubby socks should be worn during exercise and changed after a workout. Sweaty socks increase the chance of getting athlete’s foot. Feet are to be checked daily for scratches, cuts, blisters, ingrown toenails, corns, and calluses. Immediately contact a doctor for ingrown toenails, athlete’s foot, and cuts or sores that are not healing.

It is crucial that the exercise be fun and there is some variety. With a proper diet and regular exercise diabetes can be reversed.

Regardless if you have diabetes exercise is helpful for all individuals. Even if you have had diabetic complications you can definitely benefit from exercise.

If you have diabetes exercise is important for your heart health as well as weight loss; it will lower your high blood pressure, and, in some cases, improve blood sugar control as well as leading to an overall sense of well-being. If you are pre-diabetic or have risk factors it can even help prevent type 2 diabetes in some people.

Please remember that it’s important to have both enthusiasm and common sense when you are starting an exercise program. If you are diabetic it is important to practice these precautions in order to stay safe and ensure that your exercise program is productive.

Wear well-fitting, protective footwear. Drink plenty of liquids before, during, and after exercise to prevent dehydration, which can upset blood sugar levels.

If you use insulin you should also:

Monitor your blood sugar before, during, and after exercise to determine your body’s typical response to exercise. If you have a reading of 250 mg/dL (13.9 mmol/L) or higher you should wait until your levels are under control before you exercise. Talk with your physician about the possibility of decreasing your insulin dose by about 30 percent during exercise. Choose an insulin injection site away from exercising muscles (for example, avoid the legs if running) Keeping rapidly absorbed carbohydrates on hand (glucose tablets, hard candies, or juice). Eat a snack 15 to 30 minutes before exercise, and again every 30 minutes during exercise. Eat a source of slowly absorbed carbohydrates (dried fruit, fruit jerky, granola bars, or trail mix) immediately after exercise. This should counteract a possible post-exercise drop in your blood sugar levels.

It is important to select an exercise program that is enjoyable to you and can be done comfortably, this will make it easier to stay motivated and stick with a program over time. If you have had a sedentary lifestyle you might find it difficult to start and continue with an exercise program.

If you have diabetic eye complications (proliferative retinopathy) I recommend you avoid high-impact activities and strenuous weight-lifting, which may increase your blood pressure and cause bleeding in the eye. If you have neurologic complications (peripheral neuropathy) it is recommended that you avoid running which may lead to foot ulcers and stress fractures.

Julia Hanf author of the book How To Play The Diabetes Diet Game And Win. With this proven system you to can lower your blood sugar level and retake control of your health and your life. Through a real life crisis Julia figured out how to live diabetes free.

A huge chunk of the American population lives a sedentary lifestyle. Aside from having a life with very little to no physical activity, our poor eating habits contribute to an increased mortality rate. Approximately 300,000 adults in the United States die because of inactivity paired with a poor diet[1].

A recent study showed that a sedentary lifestyle can just be as hazardous to one’s health as smoking. Physical inactivity has been proven to be a major risk factor for cardiovascular diseases. Most Americans, although not completely sedentary, are not active enough to gain any health benefits from whatever activity they have. Here are some of the key statistics that correlate inactivity to certain diseases:

The probability of dying from cancer increases by 45% for men and 28% for women because of a lack of physical activity.

The chances of dying from respiratory ailments are 92% higher for men and 75% higher for women who do not participate in any form of physical activity.

The risk of dying from heart disease is 52% higher for men and 28% higher for women who lead sedentary lifestyles.[2]

It is important for everybody to keep in mind that exercise is a key to living a longer and healthier life. Physical activities such as exercise help get the entire body going. Understanding the different benefits of having an active lifestyle can help get you off the couch and on your feet exercising. Here are some of the reasons why exercising is beneficial to our health:

Exercising helps strengthen the heart muscles.

Frequent exercising makes for stronger cardiac muscles. A stronger set of cardiac muscles means more blood is pumped throughout the body. With more blood going around the body, more oxygen and nutrients are being delivered efficiently.

Exercising helps improve moods.

Exercising triggers endorphin release in the brain. Endorphin is a kind of neurotransmitter (chemical messenger in the brain) that produces a feeling of well-being.

Exercising helps lower the risks of getting chronic diseases.

Regular exercise helps decrease the probability or manage chronic diseases such as:

Cardiovascular disease. Cardiovascular exercises increase the amount of high density lipoprotein (good cholesterol) and lower the low density lipoprotein amount (bad cholesterol). This helps a person limit his chances of developing heart attacks or strokes.

Osteoporosis. Regular weight-bearing exercise promotes bone formation and may prevent many forms of bone loss associated with aging.

Obesity. Physical activity helps to reduce body fat by building or preserving muscle mass and improving the body’s ability to use calories. When physical activity is combined with proper nutrition, it can help control weight and prevent obesity, a major risk factor for many diseases.

Diabetes. Exercise helps reduce body fat, and it turn lowers down chances of developing non-insulin dependent diabetes.

A lot of health articles on exercise and fitness abound the World Wide Web. They are there to promote health awareness to people who are living a sedentary lifestyle and to remind them that something as little as 30 minutes of exercise and physical activity may end up giving you a longer and happier life.

It’s not unusual that diabetes is thought of as one of the most deadly diseases that we’re living with today. Diabetes is the primary cause of blindness among adults in the U.S.. Thousands of people are blinded each year because of this disease. Hundreds of thousands of limb amputations have been performed on diabetic patients in order to save their lives. Most of the patients in hospitals that are waiting for liver transplants, need the transplant because diabetes has ravaged their own. And, diabetes, left untreated, can lead to impotency, nerve loss, hypertension, and many more serious diseases.

In the normal course of events, when a person is told by his doctor that he has diabetes, his doctor will prescribe one or more pharmaceutical drugs to help them control their disease. But many people are looking for natural diabetes cures as well. Here are a few that have been used through the centuries:

Bitter gourd – this is a tropical plant, also known as bitter melon or kerela. Originally grown in Southeast Asia, China, and Africa. You can find it in most health stores. Some health articles recommend taking one tablespoon of bitter gourd daily, on an empty stomach, to reduce your blood glucose levels. Alternatively, you can cook it and eat it as a vegetable along with your meal.

Cinnamon – the dried and ground bark has been used as a natural diabetes treatment for centuries. Diabetics have trouble processing the glucose in their body. In trials, cinnamon seems to help the body’s fat cells utilize the glucose in the bloodstream which is why it appears to be so effective. Anything that helps the body to process glucose will be beneficial in normalizing blood glucose levels.

Chromium supplements – some health experts theorize that the soil used to grow crops today is severely deficient in many of the trace elements that used to naturally reside in the earth. One of these is chromium, which in some tests has shown to provide diabetes patients with substantial improvement from their diabetes symptoms. Chromium is believed to help the body produce insulin as well as to help the insulin already in the body to perform at a greater level of efficiency. As of today, however, there has been no government regulated trials to test the effectiveness of chromium on diabetes.

Kino – This medicinal herb has been used in Indian medicines for diabetes treatment for a long time as a treatment for diabetes.

Exercise – type 2 diabetes has become a real epidemic in this country. Many health experts lay the problem directly on the combination of them eating too much fast foods and lack of exercise. A theory, that many doctors subscribe to, is that too much body fat leads to diabetes in those that have a family history of diabetes. They believe that it is something about the excess fat that triggers the inability of the body to produce insulin or to use that insulin to process the foods they eat.

There’s no doubt that tested pharmaceutical drugs are effective in treating diabetes. With natural herbs and supplements, however, there’s usually no documented history of their effectiveness. Therefore, before taking any herbal treatment for diabetes, make sure you talk it over with your primary health care physician first.

If you have been diagnosed with type two diabetes, it is of utmost importance that you quit smoking, lose weight and eat an appropriate type 2 diabetes diet.

For many people, stop smoking, shedding pounds and eating a proper diet is much easier said than done. For some quitting smoking is almost out of the question while for others the complications from diabetes makes it difficult for them to lose weight.

However, it is very vital for those that have type II diabetes to stick to a balanced healthy diet.

Sticking to a diet that is designed specifically to help manage type 2 diabetes can be critical to a long and healthy life.

Foods that are high in carbohydrates are directly associated with blood glucose levels. People with type 2 diabetes should keep their blood glucose levels down by limiting the intake of foods that are rich in carbohydrates.

Sometimes it is very easy to know if a certain food contains a lot of carbohydrates. Foods such as chocolates, white breads, baked goods and candies that are high in sugar typically have a high carbohydrate count. People who are trying to stick to a type 2 diabetes diet should keep themselves away from foods that have a high carbohydrate count.

There are other foods such as apples, bananas, yogurts, potatoes and yams that contain carbohydrates known as complex carbohydrates. Complex carbohydrates are much better if compared to the ones that you get from foods high in sugar.

Since complex carbohydrates don’t break down as fast as other types they don’t affect the blood glucose levels as much. It is imperative that people who suffer from type 2 diabetes stick to foods that are have complex carbohydrates, rather than carbohydrates from fructose.

For those who are on a type 2 diabetes diet, lots of vegetables are needed. The diet should also contain lots of protein from lean cuts of meat and eggs. It is also crucial that people with type two diabetes eat fruits and dairy products to create a balanced diet.

Exercise is significant to those with diabetes. Exercise like taking your dog for a walk, playing basketball with your kids, or joining a yoga class at your local recreation center is so important because it can help to increase the sensitivity to insulin in the body.

Following a proper type 2 diabetes diet and leading an active lifestyle are both effective ways to manage the type 2 diabetes diabetes.

In the cases of patients suffering from diabetes we see that the levels of glucose are above normal. Generally after a person has just eaten, reaching the stomach, the food is broken down into a sugary substance called glucose. Being the stuff that powers us this is later on carried by blood to all the cells in our body. In patients suffering from diabetes insulin, the substance that converts the glues later into energy, is not produced by the pancreas in normal quantities as in normal people.

Diabetes 2 causes cells found in muscles, the liver and in the body’s fat not to be able to use the given glucose properly. Because of this the amount of glucose that is stored in the blood increases drastically wile the actual cells needing the substances are being starved of precious energy. Very severe outcomes may result because of this; over time nerves and blood vessels are seriously affected and damaged, fact that can ultimately lid to further illnesses like : blindness, kidney disease, heart attacks, nerve problems and even more drastic measures have to be taken like amputation.

As in other diseases some people are more likely to come down with the illness. Certain steps can be taken in order to prevent this. This way loosing some weight and starting an exercise program can drastically improve peoples chances not to make the disease. Attending to a more serious food diet can also delay and prevent the appearance of diabetes 2.

Overweight people and persons having a higher amount of glucose in the blood are the most likely to end up having the illness. Studies have shown that the most affected by the disease are usually minority groups. Certain women with diabetic problems in their life and people over 60 also tend to be more at risk.

Doctors have tried 2 different ways of preventing diabetes: exercising and changing ones lifestyle and drug administration. For this, certain people would start to exercise a short amount of time each day some 5 times a week and also change some of the things they trying to reduce harmful foods as much as possible. The other people would receive a drug called metformin and also they will get information about exercises and usual diets. Tests have shown that having a healthier way of life beats any medicine administration by far, the number of people that had improved their chances of reducing the risk being much greater than in the other case.

Better lifestyles and regular check ups at the doctors should always be kept in mind if one is to lid a normal and healthy life.

Despite our best efforts as parents or caregivers, children will become sick. One such illness which is becoming increasingly prevalent is pediatric diabetes. However, keeping a diabetic child healthy is dependent on being informed about the disease, its symptoms, and treatments. Caring for the child with diabetes is the responsibility of all persons who, at some time or other, has to take care of that child. As such, parents need to ensure that all care givers are informed about their diabetic child’s dietary needs.

Most children tend to have type I diabetes, previously known as juvenile diabetes, although children are increasingly being diagnosed with type 2 diabetes as well. Type I diabetes occurs when the pancreas does not work and does not produce any insulin. Insulin is needed to help break down sugars (glucose) in our body to help it work efficiently. When this breakdown of sugars does not happen, as in the case of type I diabetes, the sugar stays in the blood stream.

Because insulin is important in breaking down sugars in the body to use for energy, insulin has to be taken to control the illness. Therefore type I diabetes is also called insulin-dependent diabetes. Exercise and diet are also important helping to control this type of diabetes. Caring for the child with diabetes means that you will need to recognize the signs of the illness, as well as any resulting reactions that can occur. The main signs of pediatric diabetes are:

Breath smelling like fruit

Constant hunger

Pulse beating faster than normal

Headaches

Being weak and dizzy

Difficulty concentrating

Vision becoming foggy

Skin tending to be cold and moist

Experiencing seizures

Next, you should be able to identify when the child is in crisis, suffering either a hypoglycemic or hyperglycemic episode, and you should know what to do help in either case. Hyperglycemia occurs when the sugar levels are too high. Rising sugar levels are generally a result of eating too much, not taking the correct amount of insulin, or not exercising enough. When a child is hyperglycemic, treatment by medical professionals is needed. A child suffering from high blood sugar will complain of the following:

Weakness

Extreme thirst

Needing to urinate frequently

Not seeing clearly

Not being hungry

With hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), the symptoms vary from child to child, but some of the typical signs include:

Clumsiness

Sudden mood changes

Sweating

Hunger

Seeming confused

Trembling

Headache

Tingling feeling around the mouth

The first course of action is to increase the child’s sugar intake by giving them something sweet to drink, such as regular soda, fruit juice or glucose tablets. Once the child is feeling better, you should give them something more solid to eat. If the child is too weak to swallow or is unconscious, administer the recommended dosage of glucagon and call for immediate medical assistance. Glucagon is a medication given by injection to rapidly increase the level of glucose in the blood. It is normally the first course of treatment in severe hypoglycemia.

Diet is a major part of keeping the diabetic child healthy. The caregiver has the responsibility to ensure that the child eats what is recommended. It is also important to talk with the child and let them know that they will get really sick if they eat too many sweets or other foods that can pose a risk. It is also important to let others, such as teachers, know that a diabetic child may need to snack to boost their sugar and energy levels. The child with diabetes must also have regular meals.

Exercise is important as well, and there is no reason why the diabetic child cannot participate in all regular physical activity. Exercise helps to control blood sugar levels. However, suffering from pediatric diabetes should not exert themselves before meal time. Also, they will need to have a snack, such as juice, crackers or a fruit, handy, as they will need to replace sugar lost during physical activity.

Most importantly, children should be taught how to test their blood sugar levels during the course of the day, once they are able to do soon their own. This is important so that they can take insulin or eat something as needed.

Caring for the diabetic child, while calling for more vigilance in terms of their eating habits can be stress free once you and others taking care of the child know what to do and follow the rules. Also, make sure that emergency numbers are close at hand and that the child learns how to recognize symptoms of potential trouble and take corrective actions.

Let’s be honest, controlling your diabetes by eating a strictly diabetes safe diet can be incredibly boring. For snacks, you get crackers and bananas, and you have to lay off the bacon and even all the fancy breads. However, it doesn’t have to be that way.

The Steps!
First…
You should always be on the lookout for new, diabetes-friendly recipes, and be open to new flavors and cooking ideas.

Second…
Be willing to try a healthy substitute in your favorite meals. Some people have found that they wind up loving ground turkey or chicken in place of ground beef, and some people will take cottage cheese over cheddar any day of the week. Play around with your recipes and see which substitutes you develop a flavor for.

Third…
Read up on arranging a proper diet that doesn’t bore you to tears with bland, flavorless foods. Look for a comprehensive diet book at specialty book shops like dsdbookstore.com and start planning your meals to be both healthy, and enjoyable.

A Plan for Every (Wo)Man
Remember that there isn’t just one, standard, one size fits all diet for diabetics. What might be harmless for one diabetic might be detrimental for the next. It can be helpful to keep a daily glucose level tracker. When you do your blood test, mark down your results with comments on what you ate that day to help you weed out bad foods and remember the good ones.

Keep track of all of your results and every meal and snack with a yearly diabetes journal or a weekly diabetic diet journal. Recording those details so exhaustively can be a bit of a pain, but it’s a very good habit to get into, and an excellent tool to help in controlling diabetes.

Beyond what you eat, staying fit is a vital part of controlling diabetes. Most of us dread exercise, but if you seek out exercise you know you’ll enjoy, you may find yourself actually looking forward to it.

Look into various programs like Karate and martial arts or dance training, organized team sports, or hiking. The best ways to get fit and stay fit are the endeavours you might pursue with or without the health benefits, such as learning to defend yourself or exploring the great outdoors.

Beyond that, you can just do some simple exercises every morning. As many situps and pushups as you can comfortably do and leaving your car at home when your destination is in walking distance can be surprisingly effective.

Keeping Tabs: It’s not just for endangered animals!
To stay on track, you can keep tabs on yourself with something like a workout diabetes management journal or a diabetes exercise workbook. Record your exercise sessions and how you felt afterwards, as well as the long term results you experience such as body weight. Besides helping you to see how you’re getting the best results, this can be an excellent encouragement tool, as it serves as a kind of pat on the back for sticking with it.

The main thing you need to really control your problem with diabetes is the ability to be truly motivated. If you lose interest in tracking your developments and progress with diabetes, it’s easy to simply slack off. Do whatever you need to do to remain interested in the process of tracking your health.
